How to enter a
Ringtone into a Nokia cellphone without a composer.
Whilst most Nokia phones have a
composer built in to allow you to add your own ringtones,
certain models like the 5xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx and 8xxx series do
not. This includes popular phones like the 6210 and 7210. The only way most people have of adding ringtones
to these handsets is by using sms text messaging which can be
expensive if you use the dial up services to purchase your
ringtones.
There is however an
alternative, you can actually send yourself a text message
containing a ringtone on most networks and with most Nokia
handsets,
allowing you to add a new ringtone to your Nokia phone for just
the cost of a text message (which are often free on many
tariffs!). This allows you to change your Nokia tone on a
regular basis without having to pay per tone.
If you want to know more,
read on.. If your Nokia phone has a composer, please
jump to our 'how to enter ringtones into a
Nokia phone with a composer' page.
1. Create the 'Nokia
Binary String' to send to your phone.
The first thing we need to
do is create the text message you need to send to your
phone. The message will be a series of letters and numbers
and look like total garbage. It is actually a ringtone and
if you enter it correctly will work for you!
Make sure you have version 3.8.8 or later of the Ringtone
Converter, then select the Nokia phone and the 'Phones
without composer' option. Choose a ringtone and then
click convert. In demo mode only the first 12-15 notes will
be converted, but it will shown you how things work.
When you have done this you should get a screen like
this..

2. Prepare the text message...
Now, you need to send the ringtone to your phone.
On the above screen you will see a highlighted piece of text
starting //SCKL
You need to send this to your phone. If your network
provider has a sms gateway, such as the one provided by
Orange in the UK, you may want to try this first as it may
work for you and save you time typing the message into your
phone, but they may also add advertising to the message that
makes it fail or limits the number of characters you can
send, so give it a try first and if it doesnt work dont
worry, just keep reading.
If you want (or have) to send the ringtone directly, just
open your text message editor on your phone and type the text into
that as a message. It always starts //SCKL1581 then there is
a space character, then the rest of the ringtone text has no
spaces or returns etc. All the text is uppercase.
When you have finished, simply send the message to your
own number.
3. Wait for the message...
Now just wait for your message to come back. When it
does, your phone should say you have a new ringtone and you
can play it, and then save it.
That's it - although it sounds
complicate its actually quite easy and now you can add anew ring tone to your Nokia
phone as often as you like without worrying about paying for each
and every tone!
